Gimme was founded in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Annie Chun and Steve Broad, who set out to bring the roasted seaweed Annie grew up eating in Korea to American snackers. For Chun, seaweed was never a novelty; it was an everyday food, packed into lunches and eaten by the sheet. She also knew the category well. Before Gimme, she built and sold Annie Chun's, one of the first Asian food brands to reach mainstream American grocery stores. With Gimme, she and Broad started over with a single ingredient and a higher bar for how it should be grown.

That bar shaped the whole supply chain. Gimme's seaweed is grown organically and sustainably in agriculturally protected waters off the south and west coasts of Korea, the regions where the majority of the world's premium seaweed is cultivated. The company became the first to offer USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified seaweed snacks, roasting the sheets until crisp and seasoning them simply with ingredients like sea salt, avocado oil, and sesame. In 2024, the Korean government honored Chun for her contributions to Korean seafood exports, the first foreign individual in fifty years to receive the award.

Based in San Rafael, California, Gimme has grown into the leading seaweed snack brand in the US, with sustainability commitments that extend beyond the snack itself, from ocean-bound plastic recovery to sea turtle conservation.
