Also known as chicory or curly endive, frisee is indeed a member of the endive family. However, do not fear! This curly-q lettuce has a much milder bitter taste than traditional endive. Frisee’s crunchy, bushy texture will add a new dimension to your salads, while also diversifying your typical mild flavor profile of lettuces. This lettuce is also fantastic in the classic french recipe frisee aux lardons, where fatty bacon is sautéed with olive oil, lemon juice, and mustard, and poured over the frisee while still hot. The zippy bitterness of the frisee cuts through the fatty flavor to produce a truly rounded and delicious dish.
