Radicchio Castelfranco

1 head

78 left

Ridiculously healthy, with its dappled red and white leaves, this radicchio has a slightly peppery taste and no bitterness. It holds up well when cooked, too! Roast or grill wedges for a hearty side dish; pair with some Italian white beans; or chop and add to a raw salad. You can even add it to pasta!

J. Marchini Farms, Le Grand CA

J. Marchini Farms’ story is mainly about radicchio, but it all started with tomatoes during the 1920s when Florindo Marchini made the long and uncertain journey from Lucca, Italy. Spending his whole adult life as a tomato farmer, his sons Joe and Richard picked up their love of farming from Florindo and in the late 70s started a farm of their own, focusing on other traditionally Italian vegetables. In the 80s, Joe and his son Jeff worked to popularize radicchio in the US and so J. Marchini Farms is the reason this delicious purple, bitter Italian lettuce is so prevalent here today. In keeping with the family tradition, while they focus mainly on producing the highest quality radicchio around, they continue to enrich the biodiversity of their California soil by growing a range of traditional Italian produce, like black mission figs, fennel, and lacinato kale.

Store loosely wrapped in plastic in the crisper drawer for up to a week.
