Esopus Spitzenburg Apples

Out of stock

This 18th century heirloom variety gets its namesake from the area in NY where it was discovered. These apples get more delicious and complex flavored over time. Eat as is; use for baked apples or tarts; simmer with spices to make a compote.

Scott Farm Orchard, Dummerston VT

Scott Farm grows 130 varieties of ecologically grown heirloom apples as well as plums, blueberries, peaches, pears, quince, nectarines, cherries, grapes, medlars and apricots, paw paw & persimmon. Each year they plant new apple varieties and other interesting fruit to expand the existing orchard. The farm itself is something of an heirloom, settled in 1791 by Rufus Scott. Ownership then passed to the Holbrook family who expanded and diversified the farm. The orchards were planted in 1911 and soon became the main focus of the farm. In 1995, Fred Holbrook gifted the Scott Farm to The Landmark Trust USA, a non-profit whose mission is historic preservation. Scott Farm's mission is to grow exceptional fruit with the highest integrity, which is upheld year round by their small, dedicated staff. Each year, the day after they close their Farm Market at Thanksgiving, they begin pruning their 6,000 trees by hand with the hope to finish by mid-April. During the bloom, they plant new trees and then nurture them crop through summer heat and storms. The apple harvest starts in August, and they work tree by tree through 120 varieties. Scott Farm's fruit is hand-picked and hand-packed onsite under the expert guidance of Jamaican guest workers as well as local employees; most of the members of their Grade A harvest crew have worked in the orchards for over 20 years.
