Samascott Orchards, Kinderhook NY

Samascott Orchards is a family owned and operated farm that began in the early 1900's. In the early years, while many crops were grown, the main focus was dairy products and caring for dairy cows. From the 1940's through the early 1960's, the second generation owner, Oliver Samascott, increased the size of the farm from its original 180 acres to the present 1,000+ acres. Much of this newly purchased land already had existing apple orchards on it, and with Oliver's care, the apple crop grew significantly in size, which gave way to the introduction of pick-your-own in the late 1960's. At that time, Samascott had just seven varieties of apples to choose from: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Cortland, Rome, R.I. Greening, & Idared. By 1970, the focus of the farm shifted from dairy to apples, increasing their selection from the original seven varieties to now more than 70. Today, Samascott Orchards grows hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables ranging from berries to kiwis and cucumbers to pumpkins and offer many of them to pick-your-own customers each year!
