Deep Roots Farm
Southold, NY
Deep Roots Farm is a family-owned operation in Southold, on the North Fork of Long Island, focused on sustainability, community, and local partnerships. Founded by Tom Hart and his mother Michelle in 2012, the farm follows a diverse, year-round model that includes pasture-raised pigs and chickens, as well as vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit.
The farm rotates livestock through its gardens and pastures to naturally improve soil health, control pests, and support ecological balance. Everything sold at their self-serve farm stand, open daily during daylight hours, is raised or grown on-site. Depending on the season, customers can find farm-fresh pork, chicken, eggs, produce, sauces, pestos, pickles, herbs, flowers, and jams.
Deep Roots raises an incredibly varied selection of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. While not yet certified organic, the farm uses organic growing practices with only organic potting soil and amendments, and no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Out of respect for farmers who have completed organic certification, they choose not to label their produce as organic until certification is complete, which they hope to achieve in the next couple of seasons.
The farm's produce is primarily available from April through December, with season extension techniques underway to eventually offer fresh produce year-round. Limited quantities of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries are available in season, and newly planted apple, pear, peach, and apricot trees promise future harvests. With a deep respect for the land and their community, Deep Roots Farm exemplifies a regenerative, responsible approach to agriculture.
