Shiso, also know as Perilla leaves, can be green or red. Green Shiso has a unique flavor; a cross between mint and cinnamon with a hint of cloves. Red/Purple Shiso has a more astringent taste than Green perilla leaves. Both have a distinctive subtle aroma. Abundant in iron, calcium, carotene, and antioxidants, it is clearly “good for what ails you”.
Toss into salads instead of your classic mint or basil - larger leaves can be tough, so make sure to tear or shred them first! Try using shiso in fried rice, ramen, or fried whole and used as a garnish. Brew into a flavorful tea for the entire family.
